USE OF INTERNET POLICY
Responsible use of the Internet
Role of staff and students
· Pupils only gain access to the Internet once parental permission is received for usage and a signed declaration by pupils is made agreeing to the school rules for use of the Internet.
· Oakgrove Integrated College will endeavour to ensure that pupils are immediately made aware of the school rules regarding Internet use. These are displayed on notice boards in all ICT rooms and pupils are advised of these rules when they are in an ICT room.
· The use of the Internet as an educational tool in the research and communication with others is provided for pupils on the condition that it is not exploited. Therefore a considerate and responsible attitude should be maintained otherwise the privilege is revoked and withdrawn.
· The use of the Internet outside of school hours is the sole responsibility of parents.
Internet Safety School Rules
· Staff and pupils should be aware that no Internet user is allowed to do any of the following actions:
o Use any other person’s password to gain access to the computers
o Use the Internet for any purpose other than educational
o Download, copy or send sexually explicit materials that may cause offence either in picture form or textual and that are unsuitable material
o Violate copyright laws by downloading and saving information not acknowledged
o All materials downloaded from the Internet should be saved onto USB drive or other external storage devices to avoid any viruses.
o Take part in any racist, language or attacks on persons of other ethnic or racial persuasion
o Misuse the ICT equipment through damage or neglect whilst in your use
o Waste resources – toner and paper and on-line time- intentionally
o Use the network for work other than educational – (personal or commercial use)
o Trespass into another person’s folder or files and gain access to their documents
Classroom teachers should monitor the use of the Internet by pupils and pupils should not be allowed access to the Internet without supervision.
Online Activities Which Are Encouraged Include
· Use of the Internet to research and investigate curriculum related topics, PSD themes or career investigation into Higher education or universities.
· Use of the Internet to communicate – using E-mail- for educational purposes only and as part of the curriculum subject.
· Use of the Internet to gain proficiency in ICT skills during class time.
Online Activities Which Are Not Permitted Include
· Using the Internet for research on work other than set out in the curriculum area.
· Violating copyright laws by downloading, copying, saving or distributing materials without approval or acknowledgement to the owner.
· Logging on to chat rooms, messenger services or other communications media not permitted by the school.
· Using your E-mail services inappropriately during class time either by reading explicit language or picture messages, sending explicit materials as an attachment via E-mail or opening explicit materials not approved by the school.
· Use of the Internet to order and pay for goods not authorised by the school or to subscribe to services not listed by the school.
· Publishing personal details about a pupil on the Internet that is not authorised.
· Playing computer games that are not permitted by the teacher in charge.
Sanctions are put in place for users who violate the use of the Internet. There are varying levels of sanctions employed depending on the severity of the rule broken Sanctions might include:
· Withdrawal of access for user from the Internet as a temporary or permanent ban
· Suspension for pupils.

Parent/Guardian Consent
I have read and understood the school rules for Responsible Internet Use and give my permission for my son/daughter to access the Internet. I understand that the school will take all reasonable precautions to ensure pupils cannot access inappropriate materials. I understand that the school cannot be held responsible for the nature or content of materials accessed through the Internet particularly where pupils wilfully try to breach school policy. I agree that the school is not liable for any damages arising from use of the Internet facilities.
