Oakgrove Invitational Cross-Country Races
Oakgrove Invitational Cross-Country Races – Tuesday 17th November 2015
Just over 50 runners raced for Oakgrove College at our annual Invitational Cross-Country Races which took place during constant heavy rain. It was good to see so many of them win medals or achieve personal best times against 7 other local schools. However, all our runners deserve credit for the determination and effort shown in awful conditions.
Year 8 Team captain Emily Stewart picked up the first medal in 5th place. Other runners in her team who did well included vice-captain Amy McIntyre and Grace Donaghy. Brogan Sperou just missed out in the Year 8 boys race as he led his team mates – Reece Pollack, Jay O’Donnell and Dara Donaghy home.
Sophie McAllister led a strong Year 9 Oakgrove team to the finish but missed out on a medal by one place in 7th. Chloe Laity, Julia Geslak, Molly Heather, Tamzin Palmer, Zoe-leigh Kivlehan, Wictoria Zbrzeska and Caoimhe Houston were the other team members.
Year 9 Boys - Sam Cole 3rd, Orrin McLaughlin 4th and Auryn Coyle 7th ran a brilliant race that would have won a team event if this had been included. They were well supported by Joshua Rutherford, Dylan Howell, Jamie Killeen, Aajon Tench, Corey Walsh and Jamie Keenan.
Aimee Hughes (Capt) again missed out on a medal in 7th place in the Year 10 girls race and she was followed home by Emer Fleming 8th, Dion Watson 9th and Gabriel Zalpyte in 10th.
However, the Year 10 boys saw a brilliant race when Fionn Breslin (10.47secs) pushed Sean Straw (10.46secs) to the limits before seeing the latter race to win the race and leave him in second over the last 100m. Jack Mellon, Joseph McGonagle and Ryan Morton finished respectably.
The Intermediate girls (Yr 11 & 12) found the going tough and despite a dogged effort from Andrea Graydon the girls finished outside the medals. Well done to Sophia Ward, Aliah Orr and Bethany Richmond for finishing well in the worst of the conditions.
Con McAllister picked up the last Oakgrove medal when he finished 4th in a strong field led by St. Joseph’s runners. Aaron Kivlehan (7th) again just missed out on a medal. The rest of the team included: Jack Meehan 8th, Tom King 9th, Josh Deeney 15th and Adam Meehan 19th.
Well done to all the runners and a huge thank you to all the Year 12, 13 & 14 volunteers, Pam for taking the photos and all the PE staff for making the event so successful, amidst extremely wet conditions.
