Crème Egg Challenge reaches new heights.

The Science department’s contribution to Integration week, the Crème Egg Challenge, reached literally its highest ever standard when teams of Year 8s were the latest to compete, to boldly go where so few confections have gone before.

Six pupils were nominated from each Year 8 class but then mixed (integrated) into new teams where getting to know each other and working together would win the prize. The teams had forty minutes to build a structure using sellotape and old newspaper, which could hold a Crème egg as high as possible for thirty seconds under the withering eyes of the judging panel.

In an unprecedented and unexpected development (self-esteem not withstanding), five of the ten teams clicked from the beginning on the use of strutted, tubed paper, in much the same way steel was used for the Eiffel Tower. The strength and inherent stability of this engineering innovation meant Oakgrove was in for something special on this Challenge.

Never before have so many teams been in contention: more than one group had to stand on chairs to reach the summit of their colossus, with one of them the tallest (measured at an unofficial 259 cm) ever seen at The Challenge but, when it came to the moment of truth, it suffered apparent stage-fright and fell over!

So a more modest but stable 231cm from Team 2 (Caoimhe Campbell (8F), Ciara O’Connor-Pozo (8C), Brian Stewart (8A) and 8D’s Aoife Ward) won the day and the coveted record which literally has stood since 2006 (the current Year 11).

It might be worth noting that Oakgrove staff again were more than generous with their rubbish (which Eugene assures us will be recycled)!

And so it goes, by scientific methodology it’s conclusive: this is Oakgrove’s best ever Year 8!
